Giving up our birthdays for clean water

Every year, we give the gift of food, balloons, flowers, and good company to celebrate another year lived. Whether or not we enjoy the attention, birthdays always succeed in bringing people together. We see birthdays as an opportunity to give and celebrate life, which is why 100% of employees at Soma pledge to give up their birthdays to raise money for charity: water.

For our most recent campaign, our creative director, Liang, suggests a $27.00 donation. For about $27 in San Francisco, you might buy a nice dinner out on the town, a class at Barry’s Boot Camp (which we love), or an Uber ride to the airport. Birthday campaigns allow us to take a step back every now and then, and gain some perspective.

The $27 dollars we might spend on a birthday gift could instead provide clean drinking water to a person for life. And that, my friends, is a one-of-a-kind gift.

Every $1.00 invested in community water projects creates $4.00 - $12.00 of economic value. Clean water not only transforms lives, but it changes communities for generations. So, even though we may not be eating multiple birthday cakes this year (sorry, Liang), Soma employees proudly celebrate one more year for people here, and those around the world.

Let's cheers to that.
